Common Plumbing Problems | Post-Holiday Edition

As the Christmas season comes to a close and the festivities come to an end, it's time to bid farewell to another year of holiday cheer. The decorations are being put back in storage, the tree might stay till mid-January (but who knows), and the house is returning to its normal state. It's a bittersweet moment indeed.

But as we turn our attention to the new year ahead, you might also notice a few plumbing problems in the kitchen or the bathroom…

From clogged toilets and slow drains to frozen pipes and leaky faucets, there are plenty of issues that homeowners may encounter in the post-Christmas period. It is important to address them as soon as possible to prevent further damage. And while you may be able to fix minor issues on your own, it's always best to consult a professional if you are unsure or the problem is more severe.

Here are some common post-Christmas plumbing problems that homeowners may encounter:

Clogged toilets

One of the most common “post-festivities” problem is clogged toilets. With all the extra guests and increased usage, toilets can easily become clogged. This is mainly caused by flushing too much toilet paper or other items that should not be flushed down the toilet.

Slow or clogged drains

The increased amount of cooking, cleaning, and showering during the holiday season can lead to slow or clogged drains. Grease, oil, and food particles can build up in the pipes and cause blockages. Pouring grease down the sink is an absolute no. Grease can solidify in the pipes and lead to blockages. Instead, wait for the grease and fat to solidify, chuck it in a bag and then trash it. Remember to wipe any grease off of pots, pans, and dishes with a paper towel as well before washing them.

Frozen pipes

Cold weather can also cause pipes to freeze and potentially burst, leading to costly water damage. To prevent this, it's important to keep the heat on in your home even if you are going to be away for weeks. Insulate any exposed pipes to help prevent them from freezing in cold weather.

Leaky faucets

Leaky faucets can also be a problem, especially if they are subjected to increased usage during the holiday season. A dripping faucet can not only be annoying, but it can also lead to water waste and higher water bills.

Garbage disposal issues

Issues with the garbage disposal can also arise. Overloading the garbage disposal or putting the wrong items down the drain can lead to problems. Avoid putting fibrous foods, bones, and grease down the disposal to prevent issues.
